If you have attended or followed SenchaCon this April, then you are already aware that Ext JS and Touch are to be unified under a single framework and license called the Ext JS license. You must be wondering, where the bad news in that is? Well stay tuned and we will reveal it in a while!
Why Sencha Touch is no more for single Ext JS Specialists?
Sencha Touch is one of the most powerful frameworks for HTML5 mobile development and it has evolved over the years. The unified framework, Ext JS 6, would serve to enhance it furthermore. However, single Ext JS specialists like you won’t be able to use it anymore.
This is owing to the licensing costs that are prohibitively expensive. Yes! If you want to try the new unified framework Ext JS 6, you would end up paying thousands of dollars. The pricing on the website is available for group purchases of minimum 5 developers.
What is the current scenario?
Currently, Sencha Touch is available for free but most probably is would go unmaintained and outdated down the line in favour of the new unified framework, Ext JS 6. It’s critical for you to make a decision now. Because if you continue using Sencha Touch then down the road, in order to use the updated features you may need to pay thousands of dollars.
Is Sencha doing this to grab money?
Well, many people, including me think so! It is presumed that Sencha is making more money through its Enterprise clients. They might be benefiting from an Ext JS development company and vice versa. However, for single developers even the developers’ pack for 5 seems to be highly expensive.
What is the biggest concern now?
The biggest concern for Ext JS experts is the time invested in learning Sencha Touch and now the time required to learn another framework. You would have dedicated many hours to gain proficiency in that framework and now you must abandon it.
My words!
In spite of all your hard work to learn and tame this framework, the time is ripe to leave Sencha Touch. Otherwise, in future you would have to move to Ext JS 6 in for updating the features and pay a huge some to the company.
Why not give Ionic a try; just a suggestion, buddy! What do you think about this move of Sencha Touch? Don’t you think the price of 5 developers pack could have been more reasonable? I would love to hear from you; please leave your comments below.
